Barbara Van Cleve - A Good Day Under the Crazies - Silver Gelatin Photograph - 13 7/8 x 20 inches - Arist Statement: <br> <br>Photography has been a life long intense endeavor to share with others what I experience through my senses. Indeed “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Photography was a passionate avocation for nearly forty years until 1985 when my first solo exhibit sold out. That made me believe that I was able to communicate the “spirit” of and an emotional response to the image I photographed. As a result I know that photography is my true vocation.

Barbara Van Cleve - A Good Piece of 'Twine' - Archival Pigment Print - 29 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches - Barbara Van Cleve’s heritage is rich with family history and firsthand experience. Her family’s ranch, the Lazy K Bar, was founded in 1880 on the east slopes of the Crazy Mountains near Melville, Montana. Her father, Spike Van Cleve, was a unique combination of writer, poet, Harvard scholar and expert horseman-and “a pure quill Montanan” as her father once put it. <br>Barbara was raised with one brother and two sisters on the ranch where her family still continues to raise “black baldy” Angus cattle and fine registered Quarter Horses. <br>As a photographer, she has held a camera since she was 11 years old when her parents give her a “Brownie” camera and a home developing kit. Her youthful interest in photography soon grew into a lifelong commitment. Ranch work also began early for Barbara. Barely six, she could be found helping at the corrals or sitting astride a horse. Ever since she has been documenting the “true grit” and romantic beauty of her experiences on the ranch and on other ranches in the West.

Barbara Van Cleve - A Kind Eye - Archival Pigment Print - 18 7/8 x 13 3/8 inches - Artist Statement: <br> <br>Obviously, part of being a photographer is getting the image on film and developing it. The other part, and equally important, is the work of putting the image on paper so it reveals what I saw, experienced and knew when I made the photograph. There are many variables in this work: papers (surfaces, textures, colors or tones), developers, and the interpretive darkroom work of dodging and burning. Because my approach to the world is one of openness, curiosity and warmth, I prefer to make warm tone black and white photographic prints which invite the viewer to enter the image. Tactile paper surfaces don’t “reflect,” rather they seem to “absorb” the light which can draw the viewer into the image and help to reveal the image’s “self” or “being.” Sometimes, a matte surface paper can emphasize environmental aspects of the image, for example, dust, rain and snow. At the very least the tactile surface of the matte papers reveals, reinforce or enhance the essence of the image.

Hopefully, the viewer will share some of my enthusiasm, excitement, amazement and curiosity, as well as in a vicarious sense, the atmospheric conditions when I make the photograph. The composition and lighting of the image, as well as the arrangement of the lighter and darker areas, help to reinforce those elements of the shade experience of the revelation. The grain of the film is an important part of the image as it helps to accentuate the dust, rain, snow and the atmospheric conditions when the photograph was made.
