The cliché holds true: If you’re going to write / paint, write or paint about that which you know. From an early age, McCauley encountered black bears in their habitat in the Pacific Northwest. We have frequented the same rivers, streams, and lakes.

The primates stand erect, and have a strong resemblance to humans. But I don’t know the chimp, the orangutan, the gorilla. Painting them is like being an itinerant portrait painter going house to house. Painting as a mundane occupation.
