This Edward S. Curtis photo is the frontispiece for The North American Indian volume XIII copyrighted by Edward Curtis in 1924. This volume included the Northwest Coast of California all the way to Nevada and back towards Oregon. This image depicts a man fishing, as the coastal Indians depended a lot on the sea for their primary source of foods. Though it is not specified this man is likely from the Hupa tribe, as that is the first tribe described in volume XIII.
This photogravure was taken by photographer Edward S. Curtis in 1923 and is printed on Japon Vellum paper. The image is available for sale in our Aspen Art Gallery.
