If you are inclined to be initiated to the Snake and Antelope Fraternities of the Hopi tribe you must either be a boy of the rattlesnake clan, a son of a rattlesnake clansman, have been bit by a snake, or cured by a snake priest. This initiation would take place during childhood and when he grows older he will have the option of becoming a snake priest. There is no formal instructions of the songs and traditions instead the young men learn by observation.

This photogravure was taken in 1922 by Edward S. Curtis. The piece was printed on Japanese Tissue and is available for sale in out Aspen Art Gallery.
