In this image by Edward Curtis the subject named, “Picket Pin” is holding out a pipe as an offering to “The Mystery” or perhaps the Gods. He is standing a sloped hill with incredible cloud formations creating his background. At his feet is a large buffalo skull, which is typical to see in spiritual images. The skull is a symbol of the Spirit Animal. The subject appears to be facing the sun and is wearing nothing but a simple loincloth.

Curtis' three decade commitment to the North American Indian left him a broken man. His health, finances, and family were all sacrificed in his single minded pursuit of his dream, but he left a sacred legacy which will endure for generations to come. One of the largest collection of Curtis work can be found here in our Aspen Art Gallery.
