Plate 054 Qahatika Water Girl
Portfolio, 22 x 18 inches
Vintage Photogravure
Edward Curtis did not write a description for this photograph depicting a young Qahatika girl. She is carrying an earthen vessel on her head containing water and is dressed in a typical brown robe. The picture was taken in 1907.

Curtis Grew up in Poverty and his formal education ended in 6th grade. There is a chance that he related to the Native Americans in a way and this is why he thought it so important to photograph them. Whatever his motives were we are fortunate to have these images of a race that may have been totally lost otherwise.
