My journey through art has been anything but a straight line. I am self-taught and have worked almost exclusively in oils for 25 years, learning from extensive trial and error. I have explored styles ranging from hyper-realism to abstract and I find solace on the blurred line that separates them.
Moved by recent documentaries on big mountain skiers and mountaineers, I began to process how to approach a mountain series in an effort to depict the awe and humility I feel being among them. I used early black and white imaging of the American West as inspiration for capturing the gritty, timeless quality of these peaks. By adding subtle tones and more contemporary compositions, I hope to pay homage to all the explorers from pioneers to ski industry innovators that have made these mountains accessible.
