Edward S. Curtis - Plate 103 Red Cloud - Ogalala - Vintage Photogravure - Portfolio, 21 3/8 x 17 3/16 inches - Well Known chief and celebrated warrior Red Cloud was photographed by Edward S. Curtis in 1905 when he was 83 years old. His hair has long been gray and his eyes are closed. The warrior was born in 1822 and began his life on the war path at age 15. Red Cloud became an important part of history for his absolute determination to defend his people from the “White Man”. He is well known for his defense on the Bozeman trail and is often thought to be a genius because of his expertise in war strategy. <br> <br>Until the death of his father Lone man, his name had been Two Arrows. In recognition of his bravery he received the name Red Cloud from his father. He first gained notice as a leader by his success at Fort Phil. Kearny in 1866 when he killed Captain Fetterman as well as eighty soldiers. <br> <br>Recently a book called “The Heart of Everything That Is” was written about Red Clouds life and battles.
