Atsina Crazy Dance - A Dancer Kisses the Grandfather
Volume, 12.5 x 9.5 inches
The Crazy Dance ceremony lasted four days and four nights with dancing lasting well into the night. During the night the crazy dancers’ wives were taken by the Grandfathers beyond the camp circle in order to receive medicines from them. On their return, each woman was kissed by every one of the dancers. Her husband then ended by kissing the Grandfather. The kissing of the Grandfather is depicted in this image by Edward S. Curtis taken in 1908. This photogravure is on display in our Aspen Art Gallery.
