The Arikara developed such an incredible all-summer medicine ceremony that other tribes, far and near, learned of their wonderful and potent magic. By the time Edward Curtis was able to photograph the tribe the medicine ceremony had long been dormant (officials having suppressed it in about 1885). Amazingly Curtis was able to make arrangements with the remnant of the fraternity for a performance of it.

In this image four night men are seen dancing in small loincloths, holding the appropriate accoutrement. This photogravure was taken in 1908 and is on display in our Aspen Art Gallery.
