Edward S. Curtis - Arapaho Youth border=
Arapaho Youth
Volume, 12.5 x 9.5 inches
Vintage Photogravure
In ceremonies the annual Sun Dance is the most important. But, almost as important as the sun Dance, the Arapaho had ceremonial performances of age societies. The men and youth of the tribe would be dived in to eight societies according to age. These ceremonies were spiritual as well as military in spirit.

A young Arapaho is pictured here in full headdress likely in preparation of a ceremonial performace. The headdress almost seems too large for the young boys head. He stares at the camera squinting from the sun. This photogravure was taken in 1910 by Edward Curtis and is on display in our Aspen Art Gallery.
