The Cayuse were known to be a warlike tribe. They lived near the Blue Mountains in Washington and Oregon. Legend says that these people occupied underground dwellings, which is the only indication of the primitive culture of the Cayuse. This elderly man has long hair and his face shows a long life with its deep lines. Photographed by Edward Curtis in 1910 this image is on display at our Aspen Art Gallery.
