In the Sia tradition those who had taken scalps were formed into a society. A war party returning from a raid would have a sort of victory dance where singing and celebration would ensue. The celebrations would last for four days, a scalp ceremony was also a portion of this. On the fourth day the war-dance occurred. Pictured here by Edward Curtis is one of the war dancers, wearing a small loincloth and holding a decorated shield.

This photogravure was taken in 1926 by Edward S. Curtis. The piece was printed on Japon Vellum and is available for sale in out Aspen Art Gallery.
