One of the most striking subjects in the entire Edward Curtis collection.
The Sun Dance or “Okun” - This costume may be prominent in the ceremony for the Piegan the principal deity; the sun or "Napiw," who was called upon for supernatural aid.

As with many North American Indian tribes, the sun was the main deity. Many celestial bodies are here to focus of “supplication in Prayer by any individual who desired supernatural aid, whether or not he or she had ever seen in a vision the one so addressed.”

The influence of tribes upon each other was witnessed by Edward Curtis as he learned of similar rituals.
