There are few tribes that did not depend heavily upon the buffalo, whether they took advantage of the herds that were close by, or the more nomadic people groups that traveled with the migrating animals. Edward Curtis included this photogravure as a reminder of the historical herds.
Similar to the first image in Volume 1, “Vanishing Race – Navaho” he includes this critical element of an important North American Indian provision, the increasing size of buffalo herds after their near decimation.
