American Horse – Ogalala (Volume III)

Description by Edward S. Curtis: This subject is one of the four chiefs whose election is described in Volume III, page 16. He died in December, 1908.

American Horse was a son-in-law of Red Cloud, and played a prominent role in the Fetterman Massacre near Fort Phil Kearny, Wyoming Territory, in December, 1866. Along with Crazy Horse, Young Man Afraid of His Horses and Sword, American Horse was made a "Shirt Wearer," one of the four leading chiefs of the Ogalala, in 1870.
