From this same viewpoint the mountains could be found covered in snow. During severe winter weather, the Wishham took refuge in dwellings completely underground. “The entrance was by means of a ladder in a narrow passageway, and as there was no other opening, fire could not be built within. Cooking, therefore, was done outside or in another house, and the only light possible was an occasional cedar torch.” From The North American Indian, Volume 8.
