This Edward S. Curtis photograph depicts 3 Sioux Indians on horseback. They appear to be looking off to the right and are shown in typical Sioux landscape which could be anywhere in North or South Dakota or Montana. The land is characterized by broad rolling prairie and low hills. The figures are reflected in a buffalo-wallow a feature often seen in Sioux landscape. A buffalo wallow is a natural depression in the land that collects rainwater and runoff. In the time of the Sioux buffalo-wallows would serve as watering holes for wildlife, including the American bison.
