Edward S. Curtis - Plate 149 Spotted Bull - Mandan border=
Plate 149 Spotted Bull - Mandan
Portfolio, 22 x 18 inches
Vintage Photogravure
Although Spotted bull is of the Mandan tribe, his facial type is not true to Mandan features. Edward S. Curtis wrote that perhaps Spotted Bull has some Dakota blood in him. In this photogravure printed in 1908 the figure is in profile, showing his rather unique nose shape and a long beautiful braid down the side of his face. He is in quilled attire and looks to have eagle feather upon himself.

This Edward Curtis photo is printed on Japon Vellum and is available for sale in our Aspen Art Gallery.
