Vintage Photogravure
This beautiful photogravure taken by Edward S. Curtis pictures a mother with her very young baby in a papoose. The Hopi tribe had many medicines they used to keep their people healthy. After childbirth in the Hopi tribe the women would drink a concoction of the roots of osvi, poawi, wihtaiinwa, and chachak-tavotka to keep the blood flowing well. Juniper leaves would be boiled and drank to heal any inflammation and stop discharge. Wihtaiinwa would be given internally for swelling of the womb and there were other herbs they would use to increase the flow of milk.

This photo by Edward S. Curtis was taken in 1921 and printed on Dutch Van Gelder. The piece is available for sale in our Aspen Art Gallery.
