Plate 500 Rattlesnake Design in Yokuts Basketry
Portfolio, 22 x 18 inches
The design depicted on the basketry in this photogravure is considered a “Rattlesnake” design. The Yokuts were known for their skill in basketry and it was the principal craft of the tribe. The best baskets by far were those made with the coiling technique much like the baskets pictured here. They were used for cooking liquid foods by using heated stones. These baskets combine beauty and functionality. They are displayed on the rocks in front of the marsh.
