Plate 277 The Fish Carrier - Wishham
Portfolio, 22 x 18 inches
Vintage Photogravure
The Wisham tribe was known for its skill in fishing along the Columbia River. Catching mostly salmon, a great source of nutrition for the tribe. In this photogravure one can view a Wisham Native carrying a large satchel of fish by using a strap around the forehead. Still standing on the shoreline and looking out at the river, this piece has a beautiful and serene feeling.

From the fishing station the salmon are carried to the house, distant perhaps a quarter of a mile or more, in an open-mesh bag ("ihlkabenih") borne on the back and supported by means of a tump-line passing across the forehead. - Edward Curtis
