Description by Edward S. Curtis: Summer and winter the Sioux women performed the heavy work of the camp, and what was seemingly drudgery was to her part of the pleasure of life.

Trudging through the snow, what appears to be an elderly Sioux woman is carrying a large bundle of sticks. She looks as if she is coming out of the forest and is wearing a long draped cloak. Her face is not visible as she is looking down to keep her footing in the snow.

Edward Curtis' compelling portraits and artfully composed landscapes and still lives are not simply ethnographic records, but are works of art which also rise to the level of the very best photographers in any category. Clearly this has come to be recognized in a way which manifests itself in the marketplace.
