Edward Curtis did not write a caption for this photogravure of a Jicarilla Matron. The image shows a middle aged woman adorned with beaded jewelry. She is wearing an animal skin costume and is a great example of native dress. From Curtis’ very first portfolio in his massive project, “The North American Indian” this is the 23rd image that he used.

"I like a man who attempts the impossible" - J.P. Morgan, legendary financier and philanthropist, and principal patron of "The North American Indian" Which is exactly what Curtis did while photographing over 80 different tribes, men and women alike.
