Rabindranath Tagore, a native Bengal man, won the 1913 Nobel Prize for Literature. He was successful in many literary pursuits but was most passionate about poetry. This is likely the only known example of this image as a goldtone to exist. Edward S. Curtis had the lucky opportunity to photograph him. This photograph was done in the Goldtone medium, Edward S. Curtis’ favorite and probably one of the most brilliant photographic processes. Signed by Edward S. Curtis on the lower right.

Unlike most of Edward S. Curtis photographs, Rabindranath was not a Native American. This was done on the side of his Native American Indian project and is a strikingly beautiful image.
